STEFAN JARACZ THEATRE IN LODZ
NEW CLASSICS OF EUROPE – The First International Theatre Festival of World Classics
is a discussion on contemporary readings of the world’s literary classics. It is a review of the
most important theatrical stages in search of performances that may become parts of the new
staging canon of Europe. Presentations will be accompanied by a broad-scale educational
project that will promote the idea of an open theatre: a creative space and a place of public
debate. It will consist of numerous accompanying events, such as reviews of films of authors
and directors associated with the festival or a picnic in the yard of the Stefan Jaracz Theatre
that will take place in August.
A detailed programme of events and performances will be released in September. The invited
performances will be presented in Poland for the first time. We will present awarded shows
from theatres and companies such as the Moscow Theatre of Nations, Storchi Theatre of
Modena or Change Performing Arts from Milan. All the updates on the festival will be
released at www.newclassicsofeurope.com.

Who?
The founding fathers and head coordinators of the festival are the General Director of the
Stefan Jaracz Theatre – Wojciech Nowicki and Waldemar Zawodzinski, the Artistic Director.
This experienced duo governs on a daily basis a company of artists, technicians and
administrators encompassing 150 people. Suffice to say, Wojciech Nowicki was awarded The
Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and received a prestigious title of a
Professional Manager of the Lodz Province. Waldemar Zawodzinski is a theatrical and opera
director recognized throughout Poland and the world. During 18 years of his artistic
directorship, Stefan Jaracz Theatre received 11 Golden Masks for best performances of a
season while their creators gathered multiple awards.
The idea for a new and contemporary theatre festival for Lodz came to be a number of years
ago. The theatre’s directors consecutively applied for funding the idea through means of the
Marshall Office. This spring the Board of Province’s Local Authorities along with the
Marshall Wlodzimierz Fisiak by taking into account the position of the theatre, the scope of
the event and the efforts of Lodz for gaining the title of the European Capital of Culture
agreed, that the ambitions of the directors are in need of support.
