About the Festival

NEW CLASSICS OF EUROPE – The First Inter­na­tio­nal The­atre Festi­val of World Clas­sics
is a discus­sion on con­tem­po­rary readings of the world’s lite­rary clas­sics. It is a review of the
most impor­tant the­atri­cal sta­ges in search of per­for­man­ces that may become parts of the new
sta­ging canon of Europe. Pre­sen­ta­tions will be accom­pa­nied by a broad-scale edu­ca­tio­nal
pro­ject that will pro­mote the idea of an open the­atre: a cre­ative space and a place of public
debate. It will con­sist of nume­rous accom­pa­ny­ing events, such as reviews of films of authors
and direc­tors asso­cia­ted with the festi­val or a pic­nic in the yard of the Ste­fan Jaracz The­atre
that will take place in August.
A deta­iled pro­gramme of events and per­for­man­ces will be rele­ased in Sep­tem­ber. The invi­ted
per­for­man­ces will be pre­sen­ted in Poland for the first time. We will pre­sent awar­ded shows
from the­atres and com­pa­nies such as the Moscow The­atre of Nations, Stor­chi The­atre of
Modena or Change Per­for­ming Arts from Milan. All the upda­tes on the festi­val will be

Ste­fan Jaracz The­atre in Lodz – A Cul­tu­ral Insti­tu­tion of the Local Autho­ri­ties of the Pro­vince of Lodz, befrien­ded posts, clubs and cafés, cul­tu­ral and edu­ca­tio­nal cen­ters

Who?

The foun­ding fathers and head coor­di­na­tors of the festi­val are the Gene­ral Direc­tor of the
Ste­fan Jaracz The­atre – Woj­ciech Nowicki and Wal­de­mar Zawo­dzin­ski, the Arti­stic Direc­tor.
This expe­rien­ced duo governs on a daily basis a com­pany of arti­sts, tech­ni­cians and
admi­ni­stra­tors encom­pas­sing 150 people. Suf­fice to say, Woj­ciech Nowicki was awar­ded The
Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polo­nia Resti­tuta and rece­ived a pre­sti­gious title of a
Pro­fes­sio­nal Mana­ger of the Lodz Pro­vince. Wal­de­mar Zawo­dzin­ski is a the­atri­cal and opera
direc­tor reco­gni­zed thro­ughout Poland and the world. During 18 years of his arti­stic
direc­tor­ship, Ste­fan Jaracz The­atre rece­ived 11 Gol­den Masks for best per­for­man­ces of a
season while their cre­ators gathe­red mul­ti­ple awards.

The idea for a new and con­tem­po­rary the­atre festi­val for Lodz came to be a num­ber of years
ago. The theatre’s direc­tors con­se­cu­ti­vely applied for fun­ding the idea thro­ugh means of the
Mar­shall Office. This spring the Board of Province’s Local Autho­ri­ties along with the
Mar­shall Wlo­dzi­mierz Fisiak by taking into acco­unt the posi­tion of the the­atre, the scope of
the event and the efforts of Lodz for gaining the title of the Euro­pean Capi­tal of Cul­ture
agreed, that the ambi­tions of the direc­tors are in need of sup­port.
